So for some people the school year has begun. I hope that you and your family had a wonderful summer. Sometimes it is nice to get the kids back into a school routine and we are reminded how quickly each school year goes by. In my most previous job, I was an office manager for an elementary school for several years and worked with many, many parents. I believe that these action items helped me stay organized with my own kids, so I wanted to share them with you because a little planning in the beginning of the year will help kids know what is expected. Starting the school year organized makes a big difference.
- Place all important school information papers into a binder or file so that you can find the information when you need it. Use pockets for sports, activities and club information.
- If your kids are old enough to use a planner, get them one or make one for them. The earlier kids learn to use planning skills, the better off they will be.
- Have your child show you their school binder so that you can see how they are organizing their information. Not everyone organizes the same way, so it is a good way to see how your child stores information. Ask them to show you where they put their papers.
- Take advantage of the school supply sales for great savings.
- Input your child's school phone number and/or absence line on your cell phone so that you have it handy.
- Ensure that the school has your current contact and emergency information.
- Consider putting an extra jacket in the back of your car so you and your family are not caught in cold weather that may come unexpectedly in the coming weeks.
- Prepare fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks in small containers or sandwich bags for lunches and after school snacks. Keep some non-perishable snacks and drinks in your car for unexpected road delays.
- If you have a smart phone, photocopy the roster for you children's sports or clubs. Trust me, this comes in handy if you have trouble finding a sports location or if you have to get a message to the coach, team mom, in a quick moment.
- Put important dates like Back to School night, Family Nights, and minimum days on your family calendar. Add holidays, breaks and non school days so that you are not surprised later. If your kids are in high school, add test dates for the PSAT, SAT, ACT and AP exams.
What are things you do to start the school year organized?

I love your suggestion of seeing how my kids organize their things! My way of organizing might not make sense to them!
Thanks for leaving such an encouraging comment on my blog post today. I needed it! 😀

Those are all great suggestions! We live by our calendar (or rather, I do. I'm still working on teaching everyone else mainly my husband to READ it once in a while LOL). I love the idea of asking the kids about how they organize. My middle school son's items seem a mess to me. However, he generally gets his stuff done so tonight I think I will ask him to show me how he organizes it all. What a great idea!

I know that my son organizes a little differently than I would, but it works. Thank you for stopping by my blog!
